Paul Chuckle to take to stage in 'major new production of modern classic'

The Rotherham born entertainer will play Mr Boo in Jim Cartwright's play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.

Paul Chuckle will be returning to South Yorkshire to perform in Jim Cartwright’s “modern classic” The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.

The performer - real name Paul Elliott - will appear in the National Theatre production alongside Silent Witness actress Francesca Mills in the title role, and Waterloo Road and After the Flood star Jill Halfpenny, who will play Mari Hoff.

The 78-year-old – appointed an MBE in June this year for his charity work - will play Mr Boo in the production, directed by former Sheffield Theatres artistic director Robert Hastie.

The show will run at the National Theatre in London from December 2 to 23 January, before heading to theatres across England, including Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre, in the New Year.

The role is the latest addition for Paul who once explained his acting background as: "I went to RADA... the Rotherham Academy of Dramatic Arts!"

On top of the beloved BBC children's series ChuckleVision with late brother Barry, his recent TV work includes comedy-drama The Madame Blanc Mysteries and Benidorm, while he also received praise from Fall to the Top film director Peter Hirst who complimented him on his darker role in the movie as an assassin, calling him “a true and versatile professional.”

Commenting on The Rise and Fall of Little Voice a spokesperson for South Yorkshire Theatres called the show: “A joyful, tender and bittersweet celebration of music, ambition and the courage it takes to be heard.”

They added: “Alone in the sanctuary of her small bedroom, Little Voice fills the air with pitch perfect renditions of her deceased dad’s prized record collection of the great Divas, from Judy Garland to Billie Holiday.

“But when her mother Mari's latest fling, local wheeler dealer Ray, hears her sing he’s certain he’s struck gold.

“Will Little Voice be pushed into a spotlight she never asked for?”

The show will be at Sheffield Lyceum from Tuesday February 9 to Saturday February 13, 2027.
