Hear about 'remarkable career' of Mexborough-born footballer at event

Roy Massey played centre forward for Rotherham United, Leyton Orient and Colchester United

Mexborough-born Roy Massey will share stories from more than 50 years in professional football at the next meeting of Mexborough and District Heritage Society.

His talk, My Football Career, takes place next Tuesday, October 27 at 7.30pm, at Mexborough Athletic Club on New Oxford Road.

Roy played centre forward for Rotherham United, Leyton Orient and Colchester United before injury brought his playing career to an early end in 1971.

He went on to coach Colchester’s youth team before moving to Norwich City and then Arsenal.

His work in youth development helped nurture players including Tony Adcock, Jack Wilshere and Bukayo Saka.

A spokesperson for the society said: “The evening offers football supporters and anyone interested in a local man’s remarkable career the chance to hear his experiences of playing, coaching and helping young talent fulfil its potential.”

Admission is £1.50 for society members and £2.50 for non-members, with society membership available on the night.
