Phoenix and Wildcats club together to win the Yorkshire Shield

THE combined force of Rotherham Phoenix and Wath Wildcats staged a breath-taking second-half comeback to clinch the Yorkshire Rugby U16 Shield.

The match was decided in the very last play of the game, leaving the Dinnington and Sheffield Tigers side heartbroken in a 22-19 thriller.

Phoenix/Wildcats showed early intent. Nikki Koch provided the initial spark, powering over the line to open the scoring and signalling her side's ambitions.

However, the momentum shifted as the Dinnington and Sheffield Tigers side began to dictate the tempo thanks to the fantastic tactical kicking of Fern (Dinnington), whose precision with the boot repeatedly pinned the Phoenix/Wildcats deep into their own territory, leaving them trailing as the halftime whistle blew.

The second half required a monumental shift in momentum, and it was provided by a transition from defence to a lethal attacking display. Hailey Shepherd (Wath) and Darcy Hill, operating from full back, turned the game on its head; instead of merely absorbing pressure, they began carving through the Dinnington/Tigers line with clinical counter-attacks. Their ability to find gaps and exploit space from deep finally provided the platform the Phoenix/Wildcats needed to launch a full-scale resurgence.

Up front, the victory was anchored by a formidable forward pack. The unit of Thompson, Adams, Brooke, Walker, Koch, Bass, Horan, Layte, and Parker played a massive role in shifting the momentum, relentlessly hitting rucks and winning crucial counter-scrums.

Scarlett Adams produced the performance of her season at Hooker and she was ably supported by Bobbie Thompson, whose relentless carries through heavy contact consistently gained vital metres.

Special mention must go to Delaney Brooke; although anchoring the scrum as a powerful prop, she turned heads with a blend of strength and finesse usually reserved for the backs, combining bruising runs with delicate offloads that kept the defence guessing.

This forward dominance allowed a backline consisting of Lythall, Reid, Cakebread, Teasdale, Shepherd, Hill, Hutchinson, and Mee to truly shine. Scrum-half Daniella Lythall was a constant thorn in the side of the Tigers' defence; her tenacity and speed kept the tempo high, culminating in a sniping run for a crucial try. In the midfield, Maisie Cakebread proved a force at centre with direct running lines and tireless support play.

Mia Reid produced a moment of individual brilliance. Throwing a clinical dummy pass to slice open the defence, she surged through heavy contact, a play that ultimately led to a score. Reid then showed nerves of steel to slot a vital conversion.

With less than three minutes remaining, Dinnington held a narrow two-point lead and with the game in the balance, the ball moved through hands one last time before Romily Bass spotted a gap and threw herself over the line for the winning try.
