Millers stun promotion chasers

ROTHERHAM United turned in one of their grittiest displays of the season to take the scalp of Championship promotion contenders Ipswich.

A goal in each half from Matt Derbyshire and Conor Sammon clinched a 2-0 victory, the Millers’ second win in three matches.

They struck the first blow six minutes before half time. Ben Pringle’s free-kick squirmed across the penalty area to Craig Morgan and his header back across was met with a diving header by Matt Derbyshire.

One of the few openings of a closely fought half, it left the visitors to rue a miss inside the first 15 seconds when Daryl Murphy muscled into the clear but shot straight at Adam Collin.

The stopper came to the rescue with a superb tip-over from Luke Chambers’ header early in the second half and Murphy forced Zeki Fryers to head off the line.

Collin was also tested by Freddie Sears before the second goal arrived on 64 minutes.

Pringle again had a hand with a deep corner kick and the ball broke for Sammon to sweep into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

The winning margin could have been wider, with Paul Green seeing a volley blocked and substitute Jordan Bowery failing to capitalise when played clean through.

Nevertheless there were no complaints from the jubilant home supporters in a crowd of more than 10,000 at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.
