The speculation increased yesterday when he didn't show for his Thursday press briefing and handed the duties to assistant Paul Raynor.

Evans gets on well with Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony and director of football Barry Fry and his family home is near Peterborough. He was also linked with the job there earlier in the year. But the Millers chief has also built a strong bond with club chairman Tony Stewart.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Stewart said he was surprised by the rumours and said he still retained his confidence in the manager, who is under no pressure to leave.

Mr Stewart said: “The manager leaving is the furthest thing from our thoughts. We look after our managers and I would be amazed if anything happened, there's still a job to do."

The Millers go to Charlton Athletic tomorrow in search of their first Championship win.
