Rotherham United release retained list

ROTHERHAM United have released eight players as part of a clearout following relegation to League One.

Outgoing are goalkeeper Lee Camp, Stephen Kelly, Kelvin Wilson, Joel Ekstrand, Tom Thorpe and Chris Dawson plus youngsters Fabian Bailey and Tom Rose.

Manager Paul Warne has offered fresh terms to Joe Mattock, Richie Smallwood and Richard Wood.

Loanees Carlton Morris and Scott Allan will return to their parent clubs following the completion of the loan deals.

Sought-after forward Danny Ward has had a 12-month-deal triggered by the club.

Said Warne: “We wish all the lads who are leaving the best for the future but I’d particularly like to acknowledge the contribution of Camp and Kelly, who were instrumental in keeping this club up last season.

“Performances as well as character in the dressing room played a part in those players I’ve offered contracts to. These individuals have played really well and buy into what I want to do.”

Last week, we put out an online poll to see who you the fans thought should stay and who should leave, and it seems you and Warne were on the same wavelength for the most part.

We had around 1000 votes on each player who was out of contact, and the majority agreed that Smallwood, Mattock and Wood should be offered new deals, along with Jonson Clarke-Harris, who penned a one-year-extension earlier in the week.

It was a tight vote when it came to Camp, with 52 per cent thinking he should be offered new terms. However, he was expected to leave the club anyway.

96pc of voters said Wilson should leave along with Thorpe, Kelly, Dawson and Ekstrand.
