Let’s celebrate as one community on Saturday 18 April, sharing the borough and all it has to offer.
Dear you,
And you
And you
And even you, the one who thinks it shouldn’t be happening.
And the one who thinks it should have happened years ago.
And the one who thinks they won’t be welcome.
And the one who doesn’t care about the fuss and is just looking for a fun day out with the kids.
However, you feel about the wave of flags across our town, or the division playing out across our social media channels.
However you feel about St George, his dragons and his diversity.
However you feel about the communities around you, whether they bring you comfort, reassurance and safety, or leave you feeling like you’re not sure anymore.
You’re invited.
To celebrate St George’s Day.
Together.
As neighbours.
Because people told us they wanted to be able to celebrate their history and heritage.
Proudly. Defiantly. Without fear of judgement.
Because people told us they wanted to learn the tales and traditions that have built our English identity.
Respectfully. With curiosity and care. Without fear of being considered ignorant.
Because people told us they wanted to come together against the national backdrop of division and enjoy themselves.
Together. Without judgement.
Without fear.
So, whether your English heritage dates back to the 1600s, the ‘60s or six o’clock yesterday – we will come together to celebrate that heritage on 18th April as we mark St George’s Day.
Collectively.
Creatively.
But most importantly as one community, sharing the borough and all it has to offer and enjoying ourselves, together, just as we have done many times before.
Bring a picnic. Bring a deckchair or a blanket. Bring your family. Bring your friends.
You are invited.
