Huge amounts of electricity being used by Rotherham businesses - but it's going down

Non-domestic customers used 554 GWh of electricity

We’ve got the power! And it is certainly being used in large amounts in Rotherham if new figures are anything to go by.

A new survey of Department for Energy Security and Net Zero data has found that businesses and other non-domestic users in Rotherham used a staggering 554 GWh of electricity in 2024, according to government figures.

That is 0.9 per cent less than the previous year and 13.1 per cent less than in 2012.

A GWh is enough electricity to power around one million homes for an hour.

Data from 7,078 business electricity meters in Rotherham showed an average use of 78,332 kWh each, which is more than the Great Britain average of 61,524 kWh.

The figures, compiled by Business Energy Consultant’s Sam Allcock, show that Rotherham ranks 11 out of the 15 council areas in Yorkshire and the Humber for business electricity use.

Across Yorkshire and the Humber, the biggest rise since 2012 was in York - 2.3 per cent - and the biggest fall was in Bradford - minus 24.1 per cent.

Mr Allcock said: ”Every one of those meters belongs to a business that has to renew its energy contract, and there is no price cap to protect them.

“Small firms are paying more per unit than ever, so the single most useful thing a local business can do is check when its contract ends and get quotes before then.”
