Kids chase place at Headingley

A SCHOOL cricket team are a step closer to playing at Headingley.

Kimberworth Primary have won the Rawmarsh School Sport Partnership stage of the Drax Cup, the biggest cricket competition for U9s in the country.

The team triumphed in a series of pool matches involving nine schools held at Thorpe Hesley CC. Kimberworth finished top on points with Our Lady and St Joseph's runners-up and Thorpe Hesley third.

Kimberworth go on to the South area round where they could face more local opponents from the Rother Valley as well as Sheffield and Doncaster.

More than 550 schools across Yorkshire and Teesside are registered for the Drax Cup.

Teams play in a series of events to produce four area winners from the North, South, East and West. These teams will play the Drax Cup Finals at Headingley on Friday, July 10 prior to Yorkshire Vikings v Durham Jets in the NatWest T20 Blast.
