Boos again and more Millers misery ... on-the-whistle report: Fleetwood Town 2 Rotherham United 0

The Millers kicked off in 20th spot

Rotherham United's worrying run of results grew worse as they went down to defeat at a ground that has become a graveyard to them over the years.

A 1-0 loss was their third successive League Two reverse in a torrid October, and it also extended their barren run on Fleetwood Town soil.

They have now been beaten five times on the trot at Highbury Stadium and they haven't won there in six attempts.

Today's result left them in 20th place before the round of fixtures later in the afternoon.

A second-half response to falling behind proved to be in vain, and the home team then increased their advantage late on, leaving Millers supporters voiced their frustration at the final whistle.

Rotherham were under pressure in the early stages and the opposition were denied a goal by an offside flag when Ronan Coughlan's volley found the net.

The visitors remained on the back foot, but solid defending kept out Fleetwood who had plenty of possession but were unable to force goalkeeper Julian Eyestone into action.

The weather was kind for the lunch-time kick and the stadium was bathed in autumnal sunshine.

In the opening half an hour, the only threat from the Millers came from a couple of forays down the left flank by Jili Buyabu.

Eyestone excelled in the 34th minute, saving sharply from Mark Helm when the ball fell to the Town man from a corner, bringing chants of "USA, USA" from more than 700 travelling fans in recognition of the young American loanee.

He had an easier job of holding on to Harrison Neal's 20-yard effort soon afterwards, before Brandon Cover curled a first-time effort off target at the other end.

Rotherham had made three changes to the side that had kicked off last Saturday's home loss to Gillingham, bringing in Hamish Douglas, Jamie Jellis and Tom Bradshaw.

Kieran Ngwenya and Kian Spence dropped to the bench while Ossama Ashley missed out on selection completely.

In the Fleetwood line-up was 37-year-old Ched Evans, the striker who once enjoyed a 35-goal season with Sheffield United.

The Millers found themselves just 54 seconds into the second half when a short corner found its way into their box and Shaun Rooney finished from close range.

A smattering of boos rang out from the away end as visitors struggled to make an impact.

Boss Alex Bruce took action by bringing on four substitutes at the same time only seven minutes into the second period.

The changes, which included a debut for loan attacker Klaidi Lolos, pepped up Rotherham and Mullin headed into the arms of Jay Lynch after Jayce Fitzgerald had beaten three men and sent in an inviting cross.

Suddenly, the visitors were passing forwards more, and it was Fleetwood's turn to defend as a couple of dangerous low balls flashed across their box.

Lolos was agonisingly close to a 69th-minute equaliser with a header that went just the wrong side of the post, and Fitzgerald wasn't far away with a 25-yard free-kick as the travelling contingent got behind the Millers.

That changed in the 80th minute when Coughlan headed the visitors further behind.

For the second consecutive match, there was booing at the end as an encouraging start to the season gets left further and further behind.
