POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 65-year-old man died in an accident on the M1 motorway.

The pensioner's Skoda Fabia hatchback had come to a halt in the inside lane of the southbound carriageway, half a mile after junction 33, when it was struck by a white Mercedes panel van.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene shortly after the incident which occurred at around 12.15am on Sunday (1) morning.

The driver of the van, a 38-year-old man, escaped unhurt.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident. Anyone with information should contact the Accident Witness Helpline on 0114 2202 970.
