Princess Anne officially opens refurbished sailing club base

ROYALTY sailed into Rotherham this week to officially crown a sports club’s £50,000 refurbishment.

Her Royal Highness Princess Anne visited Ulley Sailing Club on Wednesday to find out about the work carried out to recover the dam at the centre of the 2007 flooding crisis, see sporting stars in action and chat with club members.

Sailing Club commodore and senior sailing instructor, Mark Burkitt, said they had been preparing for the visit for almost a week and that it was nice the small sailing club was being recognised by the Royal Family.

The club was given a Sport England Inspired Facilities Grant in 2014 to refurbish the clubhouse and visitor centre, which is also used by Wickersley’s Activity Centre and the  Friends of Ulley Country Park.

Princess Anne, the club’s first ever royal visitor, was greeted on her arrival by the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Maggi Clark, and Rotherham Borough Council chief executive Sharon Kemp.
