Rotherham takeaway closed over rat problem

A TAKEAWAY in Rotherham town centre has been closed after inspectors found evidence of rats on the premises.

The discovery was made during a routine inspection of The Planet Pizza and Burger Bar at Main Street on January 29.

The inspector found evidence of an active rat infestation in food preparation areas which presented “an imminent risk to health”.

The food business operator, Faisal Syed, was served with a hygiene emergency prohibition notice and a notice of intention to apply for a hygiene emergency prohibition order.

The order was was granted at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court last Thursday (6), when the court agreed with the actions of the environmental health officers.

Mr Syed was also ordered to pay the council £536 in costs.

Cllr Emma Hoddinott, cabinet member for waste, roads and community safety, said: “Environmental health officers immediately closed the premises following the inspection due to an imminent risk to health. Food business operators have a legal duty to keep their premises hygienic and any failure to do so will not be tolerated.”

A council spokeswoman said checks had been carried out at the takeaway every day since the notice was served to ensure it remained closed.

The takeaway will not be allowed to re-open until the council is satisfied that there is no longer an imminent risk to health.
