Gloria helps make it a very sociable Christmas!

IN the true spirit of Christmas, Owlerton Greyhound Stadium has joined forces with a Sheffield housewife in a bid to make sure nobody misses out on festive fun and turkey trimmings this year.

Hundreds of people will descend on Owlerton Greyhound Stadium on Wednesday, as Christmas day is re-created for those who usually spend the festive season alone.

As well as the traditional Christmas cheer, guests will be treated to a special surprise as the Sheffield Eagles players exchange their sports kit for waiters’ outfits, to serve up the Christmas feast.

The event ‘Home Alone At Christmas’ is the brainchild of  Sheffield housewife Gloria Stewart.

Gloria comments: “I hosted the first event three years ago after meeting an elderly woman in hospital who had spent the previous four years alone at Christmas after losing her husband.

Inspired by her story and aware that many others would be suffering the same ordeal I set about making Christmas special for everyone, with or without family to share it with.”

Several businesses including HSBC, City Taxis, Thornbridge Brewery and Warwick Developments have also already shown their support, with donations of food, drink, transport and gifts.

Now the founder of the initiative, Gloria Stewart, is calling out for further support to make the event a huge success.

Gloria concluded: “This event and all of the people involved have become very close to my heart. As a wife and mother of four I am extremely grateful for the things that I have been handed in life, but I know that not everyone has been as lucky.

“I’m extremely grateful for all of the lovely donations that we have received so far and I hope that even more people can come forward to help- gifts, food, drink or decorations- anything to make the event special for our guests.”

John Gilburn, Managing Director at Owlerton Stadium added: “Like Gloria, we were moved by the idea of supporting those who experience Christmas at home alone.

“Owlerton Greyhound Stadium has long enjoyed a reputation as the key entertainment destination in Sheffield, so we're delighted to once again host the very worthy ‘Home Alone at Christmas’ event.

“Last year the event proved a huge success, with over 200 guests and the support from Sheffield businesses and the general public was phenomenal.

“I urge everyone who is in the position to do so, to donate something towards this fantastic cause to ensure this year is as much of a success as last.”

Home Alone At Christmas will take place on December 15, at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium from 12.30pm till 5.30pm.
