Free pitches in bid to boost market trade

COUNCIL bosses are offering new traders at a Dearne Valley market a free pitch and discounted rent in a bid to boost numbers.

Newcomers at Mexborough Outdoor Market can take a market stall for free on their first visit, get their second visit half price and their third visit full price.

Traders will then get their fourth time free, the fifth at half price and from then on pay full price.

Mexborough’s market dates back more than 800 years and it moved to its current location in a purpose built market hall and outdoor market site off High Street in 1975.

Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “Improving markets across the borough is one of my priorities.

“This rent offer is a great way for traders to try out Mexborough market before signing up to a longer-term lease.”

Mexborough councillor Sue Phillips said: “With over 90 stalls, Mexborough market has a fantastic range of goods on offer, from fresh fruit and vegetables to meat, fish and much more.

“The market is well supported by the local community and I would encourage traders to take up this introductory offer.”

The full market is open is from 9am to 4pm, Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, although many traders in the Market Hall open 6 days a week Monday to Saturday. 

A second-hand market held every Thursday, while the Fish Market is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, from 6am.
