Four years custody for teenage Manvers offender

A TEENAGE offender involved in the Manvers disorder last summer has been detained for four years inn a youth offender institution.

The sentence is longer than those handed down to many of those already convicted for their roles in the trouble, which erupted in August last year.

Callum Bacon sentencing means more than 100 people have been convicted, with sentences totalling more than 250 years in custody.

South Yorkshire Police said Bacon was captured on body worn camera viciously kicking a police officer's riot shield knocking them to the ground.

The 19-year-old was then recorded throwing missiles at officers who were protecting the hotel, as well as setting fire to a nearby fence.

He evaded capture for two months following the disorder, however, and was arrested after being identified through a media appeal.

When interviewed, he refused to provide answers to any question about his behaviour on the day and was charged with violent disorder and arson - and pleaded to both counts.

Bacon, of Pontefract Road, Pontefract, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court where he was sentenced to the period of custody.

The Manvers disorder emerged from a protest about the Holiday Inn Express being used to accommodate asylum seekers.

The disturbance escalated into a very serious clash, with some police officers hurt as they tried to protect residents and staff sheltering in the hotel.

Attempts were made to burn the building before police were able to regain control of the situation and some offenders have been jailed for up to nine years as a result.

The hotel is no longer used for asylum-seekers.
