Millers too strong for Stocksbridge

MANAGER Steve Evans took another look at his new recruits in match action as the Millers notched a comfortable win at non-league Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Goals from Richie Smallwood, Grant Ward and Jonson Clarke-Harris secured a 3-0 win for a side peppered with new signings and trialists. Around 20 players were utilised in all, including recent arrivals Danny Collins, Tom Thorpe and Greg Halford.

One of this summer’s other new arrivals, Aidy White, squared for Smallwood to open the scoring after 18 minutes and Ward, who has been the subject of talks between Rotherham and his parent club, Tottenham Hotspur, doubled the advantage ten minutes before half time. It was his second goal in as many games.

Clarke-Harris headed the third goal from substitute Danny Ward’s cross soon after half time and but for a string of sharp saves from Steels keeper Sam Andrew, the winning margin would have been greater.

The build-up to the new Championship campaign continues with a friendly at Alfreton Town on Tuesday night (7.30pm).
