Eight-mile queue after spillage on M1 near Rotherham

ONE of four lanes is now open on the M1 southbound near Rotherham following a spillage earlier today — but drivers are being warned of eight miles of residual congestion and 45-minute delays.

The M1 southbound between J33 and J32 was closed earlier this morning due to a spillage of debris and gravel affecting all lanes, with traffic officers at the scene assisting with traffic management.

Lane 4 is now open on the affected stretch while lanes 1, 2 and 3 remain closed to clear the spillage.

It is the second major incident affecting the motorway in as many days after hold-ups yesterday due to cows on the road.

A spokesperson for National Highways Yorkshire said: “There is a speed limit of 20mph for lane 4, so please allow extra time for your journey as there is currently eight miles congestion on the approach with 45-minute delays.”
