Reopening the cemetery gates again has been 'well received', says Rotherham parish council
Gates now open two days a week - but will shut if bad behaviour returns
Reopening the gates at a Rotherham cemetery has been ‘well received’ by visitors to the site.
Thurcroft Parish Council closed the main gates at Thurcroft Cemetery permanently in April after cars, vans and motorcycles were driven onto the cemetery premises, intimidating groups gathered, there was alleged drug and alcohol use, loud music was played and a warden was subjected to verbal abuse.

But the move sparked controversy after many visitors to the cemetery said they could not access loved ones’ graves.
Pedestrian access to the side of the cemetery had remained open with a gate accessible by wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

But the parish council relented and since October 4 the gates are now unlocked from 9am until 3pm each Sunday and Wednesday.
However, it said they would be fastened again if the anti-social behaviour became an issue once more.
A spokesman for Thurcroft Parish Council told the Advertiser this week that the decision to open the gates had been welcomed by people.
He said: “Closing the gates certainly had a positive effect on the ASB problems, although it hasn't completely eradicated it. We do still get some issues.
“We only open the main gates on Wednesdays and Sundays from 9am until 3pm. This has given something of a compromise for those who had real difficulties attending.
“It has been generally well received.
“The pedestrian entrance remains open 24/7. We will of course continue to monitor the situation.”
