She was given a tour by English Heritage chief executive Dr Simon Thurley and project manager Tim Baldock.

She said: “It is very exciting to see the final touches going in just a few days ahead of Conisbrough Castle opening to the public.

“The old oddly-shaped visitor centre has gone and the new visitor centre has been created from a huge extension of the original lodge house.

“The castle keep now has videos that greet visitors and the building has never looked better. I’m sure this will be a record year for visitors.”

The castle reopens to the public on Saturday (10 May) at 10am.
