If you’ve been thinking about hopping on a train, now is the perfect time.
The Department for Transport has just launched the Great British Rail Sale 2026, offering more than four million discounted tickets across the UK.
Running for one week only between Tuesday, January 6 and Monday, January 12, the flash sale slashes fares by 50% to 70% for journeys between January 13 and March 25.
For Yorkshire travellers, this is your chance to explore the region (or venture further afield) without breaking the bank.
Whether you’re dreaming of a weekend in Harrogate, a day trip to Whitby, or a jaunt to London for a West End show, there are bargains to be had.

How to find the best deals
Northern, which serves most of Yorkshire’s towns and cities, is participating in the sale, while other operators such as TransPennine Express, LNER, and East Midlands Railway, are also offering significant discounts on popular routes.
To make the most of it, start by checking operator websites and apps regularly, as tickets can sell out fast.
Signing up for fare alerts or following the operator on social media is also a smart move as many of the best deals are snapped up within hours.
Another tip: be flexible with travel times and routes. Off-peak journeys, early morning or late evening trains, often attract the deepest discounts.
Past sales show that even short journeys can be dramatically cheaper. For instance, a typical fare from Leeds to York might cost around £15, but during the sale, it could drop to £7 or less.
Want to take a longer trip? Routes from Sheffield to London or Bradford to Manchester are also included, sometimes at discounts of more than 70%.
This year’s iteration of the annual sale comes after the Government froze rail fares for the first time in 30 years, making it even easier to travel on a budget.
Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, said: “‘We all want to see cheaper rail travel, so whether you’re planning a half-term getaway, or visiting friends or family, this sale offers huge reductions.”
If Yorkshire adventures are on your mind, don’t wait. Check fares today, plan your trip, and get ready to explore for less. But act fast, because the clock is ticking on this one-week-only event.
