Fire service at former Mecca bingo building in Rotherham

CORPORATION Street in Rotherham has been closed by emergency services dealing with an incident at the old Mecca Bingo building.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and South Yorkshire Police are at the derelict former Regal cinema, which dates back to 1934.

Corporation Street has been closed, with First diverting bus services from Rotherham Hospital down Mansfield Road, Wellgate and Drummond Street.

The building did not reopen for bingo after the Covid lockdowns and plans were filed for demolition.

Proposals were for it to be replaced by 45 apartments and three commercial units — but a campaign to have the building listed has since been launched.
