WHISTON REMEMBERS: As we approach Remembrance Sunday this weekend when the country comes together to remember the fallen from two World Wars, here in Whiston we will also remember our brave heroes who gave their lives. On Sunday, morning Remembrance services will be held at both Whiston Parish Church and Whiston Methodist Church and, at the Parish Church, the service will be followed by the Act of Remembrance when poppy wreaths are laid at the Lychgate. There will then be Whiston Parish Council’s Remembrance Lunch at 12.30pm in the Parish Hall. Poppy garlands have, once again, been displayed at our Remembrance Bench by the Green, and this year our special ‘Twinkly Pro’ tree by the bridge will be glowing red, as a mark of respect, from Wednesday November 4. Do go along and take a look. “We will remember them”.
CAN YOU SUPPORT THE COOP’S CHRISTMAS ‘GIVING TREE’?: This year, for the first time, the Coop on Worrygoose Lane will have a special Christmas ‘Giving Tree’ in store. This is the initiative of Store Manager, Donna, who will be adding labels to the tree, each giving the age/gender of a child, with the idea that customers are requested to take a label and purchase a suitable gift which they then return to store. This idea is part of the annual Rotherham Christmas Toy Appeal, in conjunction with Rotherham Families First, and the Coop store have also agreed to be a ‘drop-off’ point for people wishing to donate. All donated gifts will go to children who may otherwise not be so lucky this Christmas.. Please support Donna and her team at the Coop if you can.
CONGRATULATIONS TO WHISTON’S ‘PUB OF THE YEAR’: Congratulations to The Hind pub on East Bawtry Road who have won Ember Inns ‘Pub of the Year’ Award, beating approximately 350 other pubs. Manager, Mikey, says the award was given in recognition of rising to the challenge of turning around the pub’s performance and, in addition, they also won the ‘Guest Obsessed Award based on customer feedback. The next ‘Sip and Paint’ evening is already fully booked, but on the evening of December 5 there will be musical entertainment at The Hind to raise money for Rotherham Hospice.
GROUP’S HALLOWEEN FUNDRAISING EFFORTS: A big shout out to the young ladies of Expression U16 Lyrical who set up their Halloween ‘Bake Off’ stall outside the shops on Worrygoose Lane last week to raise funds to help them take part in The Dance Summit 2027. They have set up a Gofundme page and all monies raised will go towards entry fees, kit and other essentials.
