Rotherham Titans line up Year 11 rugby academy taster session at TRC

EFFORTS to get more Rotherham kids into rugby will take a step up at a special taster session next month.

Rotherham Titans has organised a college rugby taster day for Year 11s (15 and 16 year- olds) at TRC on Tuesday, June 1 for those who want to combine studies with playing.

The day runs from 10am-12am and includes a tour of the college, information on TRC courses and a one-hour rugby taster.

“It is open to players of all abilities, even people completely new to the game,” said Titans head coach Steve Salvin, who is helping drive the new initiative.

Rugby is time-tabled into the TRC schedule, so there are daytime rugby sessions Monday-Thursday which vary from gym sessions to rugby sessions to classroom-based learning sessions.

“It gives them an opportunity to take part in a really good programme and improve as a player but also continue their education, so they get the best of both worlds.”

The day is part of a wider initiative by the Titans Community Foundation to put a player pathway in place to attract and retain rugby players.

The club is working with Rotherham secondary schools' Year 7-11s, Thomas Rotherham College at 16-18 and Sheffield Hallam University at 18-plus.

Added Steve: “We are making every effort to align these lads with clubs in Rotherham like the Titans and Rotherham Phoenix. No matter who they are aligned with, the important thing is they stay in the game.”
