Former Lane ace Whitehead waits for fitness clearance

THEY started well, but Mike Schmid’s Esher have slipped off the rails -athough the Surrey side are hoping a renewal of their shared-player agreement with Harlequins will bring some added zest to the team at Clifton Lane tomorrow.

And former Titans’ skipper Mike Whitehead could be back in the side after struggling with injury since his switch south.

Both Ross Chisholm  and Sam Smith will return to the back division after scoring tries for near-neighbours Quins in their European tie last weekend.

Director of rugby Schmid is also hoping that some, if not all, of the players who have been injured over the past three weeks will be available for selection which means possible recalls for Whitehead - who has only played five games this season - Paul Barker and Sam Ulph.

Whitehead suffered a hamstring injury at the start of the season and has struggled with it since.

Schmid’s main concern is over the Jekyll and Hyde nature of recent Esher performances which saw them heavily beaten by winless Birmingham a fortnight ago and then escape with a last-minute draw at home to Plymouth Albion last week, courtesy of a penalty try.

Before that Esher have showed their capability since coming up from National One in style last year, including a home victory over Bristol.
