The fee and the potential 'extras' in the Rotherham United sale of Sam Nombe

THE sale of Sam Nombe could be worth towards the £1-million mark to Rotherham United who are already guaranteed £600,000 from the striker's exit.

The Millers bade farewell to the striker this week after sanctioning the striker's move to League One MK Dons after a series of negotiations.

The Advertiser understands that the initial fee is £600,000 and that add-ons are in place that may take the amount close to seven figures.

If that sum is realised, it means Rotherham will recoup the majority of their outlay when they made the 27-year-old their record signing - just past the £1m mark - when they took him from Exeter City in 2023 during the managerial reign of Matt Taylor.

Rotherham, relegated to League Two last season, are likely to earn more from the deal based on Nombe's number of appearances and there will be extra money due if MK are promoted to the Championship.

There is also a sell-on clause.

The Dons are well financed by owners from Kuwait and are being tipped to march straight through the third tier into the Championship after climbing out of League Two last term.

That would be an ideal development for Rotherham bearing in mind those add-ons included in the transfer that took Nombe to Stadium MK after three years in South Yorkshire.

In former Millers manager Paul Warne, MK have a boss who has been promoted from League One four times in the last eight years

He has a number of his former Rotherham players with him in Buckinghamshire in Ben Wiles, Cohen Bramall and Dan Barlaser.

Warne said of his latest capture: “Sam is a forward I’ve always liked. He doesn’t give a moment’s peace to the opposition’s backline. He thrives off crosses, which I like my team to excel at. He’s physical, confident and has consistently scored goals at this level.

“His work rate for the team is also to be applauded. He improves a very strong department of our squad. I still believe there is more to come from Sam with the supply and support he will get from this team and staff.”

Nombe wanted to remain above fourth-tier level and will financially benefit from the switch. They were two of the reasons why he was keen to rejoin the team where he began his career.

“It was one of the easiest negotiations I’ve ever done with a player,” Warne said. “His heart was set on coming back to the city to play for this great club.”
