The club Dominic Iorfa turned down in favour of Rotherham United

The centre-half had been training with the Millers

New boy Dominic Iorfa turned down the chance to play in a higher division as he chose to commit the next few months of his career to League Two Rotherham United.

The big centre-half has finalised a short-term deal to become part of the Millers' campaign until January.

He rejected the overtures of League One side Bromley and opted to remain in South Yorkshire with his partner and three young children.

The 31-year-old former Sheffield Wednesday man had been without a club since the end of last season and can't wait to get started with Rotherham.

"Saturdays have become a big part of our lives," he said. "It's like a routine. It's a family day out. Everyone looks forward to matchdays. The kids come to the game and then we go and get food afterwards. It's become a bit of a tradition.

"When I was weighing up my options, I was thinking: 'Do I really want to go somewhere about two, three hours away?' I love playing football, and I love my family experiencing the highs that I have as well. It is definitely something that played a part in my decision."

He was signed by head coach Alex Bruce - the son of Steve Bruce who was the Owls manager who took him to Hillsborough back in 2019.

The defender felt the itch to return to the game as pre-season came and went and eventually asked the Millers if he could train with them.

"It's been a bit of a strange one because I've never been in this position before," he said. "At first, at the start of the summer, it was okay because I've got young family and I spent a lot of much-needed time with them. That was keeping me occupied, really. It allowed me to have a switch-off, to get some rest.

"Then it kind of gets to a point where you're seeing your friends and ex teammates all back in (for pre-season training) and you're thinking: 'I need to get something sorted now.'

"You're weighing up your options. Things just took longer than expected. The longer you leave it, some things disappear. At the end of the transfer window. I was doing a lot of one-to-one training with my personal trainer,  but that's different to a team environment."

Iorfa knew Rotherham assistant coach Steve Agnew from their time together at Hillsborough where the former coached under Bruce Senior.

The player, who is based in Wickersley, wanted to return to a squad environment to further hone his fitness, and linking up with the Millers at their Roundwood HQ seemed like a perfect fit.

"I thought 'Let me see if I can get down here', with me living not too far away," Iorfa said. "I'd worked with Aggers before and I thought: 'I've got a connection there, maybe I can come in and train with a group.'

"Thankfully, they let me come in. The moment I started training, they expressed their interest in me signing.

"When I first came in, I wasn't even thinking about that. I just thought that I needed to stay fit and be ready for whenever I decided to sign somewhere. Then the opportunity came here, I had a good think about it and here we are now."
