Rotherham United and agent fees

ROTHERHAM United’s spending on agent fees in the last year is dwarfed by that of most of their Championship rivals, new figures have revealed.

Some clubs shelled out more than £4 million to players’ representatives, highlighting the challenge faced by Rotherham who refuse to put their financial stability in peril as they look to stay in the second tier.

The Millers and Reading are the only sides, along with Blackpool, below the £500,000 mark. Norwich City top the table with nearly £4.4m, closely followed by Watford and Burnley.

Collectively, the 24 Championship sides posted a whopping total of more than £36m.

Reading’s figure is lower than Rotherham’s only because the Royals have been operating under transfer restrictions imposed by the EFL for breaching profit and sustainability (formerly known as financial fair play) rules.

The numbers cover the window last summer following the Millers’ promotion from League One and the one that took place through January.

Players brought in for the Championship campaign by former manager Paul Warne were Tom Eaves, Cohen Bramall, Conor Washington, Lee Peltier, Cameron Humphreys, Peter Kioso, Jamie McCart and Robbie Hemfrey plus three loanees: Grant Hall, Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Scott High.

New Year signings on full contracts under new boss Matt Taylor were Sean Morrison and Jordan Hugill and there were five loan arrivals: Tariqe Fosu, Conor Coventry, Leo Hjelde, Domingos Quina and Bailey Wright.

The Millers’ figure will also include any fee involved in the new deal agreed by Viktor Johansson.
