Question marks as the Rotherham United Brandon Williams situation lingers on

He played more than 50 times for Manchester United earlier in his career

Rotherham United have remained in contact with ex-trialist Brandon Williams, and the prospect of him eventually signing a deal with the Millers isn't being entirely ruled out.

The former Manchester United youngster parted company with the club late last month after featuring in all seven summer friendlies and continuing to train with them after the start of the League Two season.

No contract proposal has been put to the free agent who is trying to resurrect his career after personal issues off the field, but boss Alex Bruce is refusing to completely close the door on the prospect of the 25-year-old eventually being offered a deal.

"I'm still speaking to Brandon," he said. "Obviously, everyone knows he was in here training. There's no update, though, at the moment."

The head coach confirmed that Williams was no longer at Roundwood and believes that the left-back is working out with another club.

"I think he might be," Bruce said. "I'm not sure who with, though."

An image recently emerged on social media that appeared to show the defender taking part in a session with Rotherham's fourth-tier rivals, Rochdale.

Steve McClaren revealed that chairman Tony Stewart sanctioned an increase in the recruitment budget in the final days of the transfer window and the head of football said that those funds hadn't been spent.

As a free agent, Williams can join a club at any time, so the passing of deadline day isn't an issue.

The Millers have made 15 signings through the summer and in the final stages of the window brought in two attackers and two midfielders.

The Advertiser asked Bruce: "Is there any prospect that, at some point down the line, you will make Brandon an offer?

He replied: "Maybe, but at the minute it's not being discussed. It's not been a priority because, obviously, we had dealings to do at the top end of the pitch. We had a decent amount of numbers in defensive areas.

"Whether it's something we revisit now that we've got in the forward and midfield players that we need ... you'll just have to watch this space."

Rotherham have been playing with a trio of centre-backs in a three-man rearguard this season and have Ewan Otoo and Jili Buyabu who can operate at left-back, although the latter is very much more of an attacker than a defender.

Bruce likes the never-say-die attitude that is developing in a new-look squad.

"I said it when I first got the job (in June), the one thing that I needed to do was try to find decent players with decent characters," the boss said. 'What is he like as a lad? I think that is so important, especially when you're bringing in so many players into a dressing room. If you've got people who are willing to roll up their sleeves, it's not a bad foundation to work from."

Meanwhile, young attacker Gabriel Biancheri, who had a loan spell at AESSEAL New York Stadium last term, has left Manchester United to join Austrian side Wacker Innsbruck on a permanent deal.
