Other priorities preventing a Rotherham United contract offer for Brandon Williams

The defender spent much of the summer on trial with the Millers

Rotherham United are prepared to run the risk of former Premier League ace Brandon Williams signing for another club as they continue to weigh up whether to offer him a contract at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The left-back, who played more than 50 times for Manchester United earlier in his career, spent all of pre-season on trial with the Millers but left last month without a deal being put on the table.

The club have remained in contact with the free agent and, despite the lack of movement in the situation, still aren't ruling out the possibility of adding him to their League Two squad.

The Advertiser understands he has been back in the camp this week.

Rotherham are aware that the 25-year-old has trained elsewhere and could be an attractive proposition for a different team.

"It's possible that Brandon could move on to somewhere else," boss Alex Bruce conceded. "We'll have to wait and see. I speak to him regularly. We've helped him to get to a level of fitness that gives him a chance wherever he goes."

Williams is looking to revive a career that stalled through well-publicised issues off the pitch and played in all seven of Rotherham's summer friendlies.

The Millers still have some money left in their playing budget. However, as has been the case for weeks, they have more pressing recruitment priorities than signing a left-back.

When asked again why terms hadn't been put on the table for Williams, Bruce replied: "Numbers in certain areas, numbers in positions, little bits like that. There are a few different things, to be honest with you.

"He's a player I like, I wouldn't have had him around the place for a long time if I didn't. So, yeah, we'll just have to watch this space with him.

"He's been a great lad around the place I have to say. He's mucked in, he's done well, he's trained really well."

He responded to a question about whether the Millers had got the player to a fitness level where he was capable of playing first-team football by saying: "Certainly not far off it, yeah."
