Police have appealed for information about the suspected arson and the subsequent attack on emergency workers at the former Stute club, Maltby Miners' Welfare Institute, on Muglet Lane on April 28.

Emergency services were called to the building at 6pm and while there, the police and firefighters had stones and bricks thrown at them by youths, a police spokeswoman said.

Police are working to identify those involved and asked for anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch, quoting incident number 703 of April 28.

Any footage can be emailed to [email protected] or alternatively email [email protected] to contact the team directly.

The blaze came six months after the working men’s club sold at auction for £246,000.

There had been a long-running community campaign to save the Stute, which was closed in late 2018, when directors said the decision was taken to protect the linked recreation facilities.

Maltby Miners Welfare & Recreation Protection Group held various meetings and events, including a well-attended march in August 2019.

The venue was sold off by landowners Ciswo, the coal-mining charity, which insisted that the linked sports facilities on the other side of Muglet Lane were safe.
