The blaze comes six months after the working men’s club sold at auction for £246,000.

There had been a long-running community campaign to save the Stute, which was closed in late 2018, when directors said the decision was taken to protect the linked recreation facilities.

Maltby Miners Welfare & Recreation Protection Group held various meetings and events, including a well-attended march in August 2019.

The venue was sold off by landowners Ciswo, the coal-mining charity, which insisted that the linked sports facilities on the other side of Muglet Lane were safe.

Rother Valley MP Alexander Stafford described the fire as “absolutely devastating news”.

He added: “This iconic building was the heart of the community.

“We need to get to the bottom of what happened. If you have any information please do pass it onto the police and fire brigade.”
