The wonderful work of volunteers

Amy Hebdon is the fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in Rotherham. Each month she updates readers on the latest stories and developments by supporters across the town.

MACMILLAN is a charity which relies on 98 per cent of our income and without the wonderful dedication of our volunteers we wouldn’t be here to support people when they really need us most.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Pat Robinson and Mavis Skipper who were the last two standing members of the Mexborough committee.

The committee started back in 1995 and has had numerous members over the years and organised various events including an annual golf day held at Wath Golf Club which raised thousands.

The committee have raised over a staggering £151,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support which will really make a difference to thousands of people who need our support.

Despite closing the committee down, Pat and Mavis will continue to organise a few fashion shows each year which are held at Highfield Court, Fitzwilliam Street, Swinton, and you may still see Pat’s friendly face around as she remains as a collector, representing Macmillan at cheque presentations and collecting money on our behalf.

The committee would like to thank the support of local people who have helped raise such a wonderful amount.

Pat commented: “It’s been truly amazing the support we’ve received from the local community. It’s an honour to go and accept the cheques on behalf of Macmillan, for example the Wath and West Melton Panel Games League who support us year after year.

“We restrict funds so the money raised is spent on supporting people with cancer locally."

It’s wonderful working with our volunteers and I can’t thank everyone who has been part of the committee over the years enough.

The committee have not only raised a phenomenal amount of money for people affected by cancer, they have also been extremely influential locally and have done a fantastic job of heightening the profile of Macmillan services in the area. Macmillan Cancer Support was founded by volunteers and to this day they remain a hugely important part of the charity.
