Probe after woman killed by train

A WOMAN died after reportedly being hit by a train at Mexborough station.

Billie Jane Coulton (28), from Sheffield, was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck shortly after midnight on Thursday.

British Transport Police, who attended along with paramedics and South Yorkshire Police, say the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

A BTP spokeswoman said: “We are currently investigating a fatality at Mexborough railway station.

“The train involved was an empty Northern Rail passenger service, which was returning to the depot.

“Mexborough station was closed for a period of time overnight while officers worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
