Rotherham's first Green councillor announced as independent joins party
FORMER independent Rotherham Councillor Mick Bower has joined the Greens, giving the party its first seat on the authority.
His decision comes as the Green Party’s profile has grown locally and nationally.

Tony Mabbott, chair of Rotherham Green Party, said: “This is a huge moment for Rotherham. Mick Bower becoming our first Green councillor marks the start of a new chapter.
"One where residents have a strong, credible, community-focused voice in the council chamber for the very first time.
“Mick is exactly the kind of principled, grounded and compassionate councillor Rotherham needs. He has built a reputation for working across political divides, securing investment for youth projects, and standing firmly against racism and division.
“He’s long been respected across Sitwell and beyond - and we are absolutely delighted he has chosen to join the Greens at this pivotal moment.
"With hundreds of people joining the party locally, and with the Greens becoming the fastest-growing political movement in the country, Mick’s decision reflects where hope, integrity and real change are now coming from.”
Cllr Bower said: “My duty has always been to the people of Sitwell and Rotherham.
“Over the past year I’ve watched the Green Party stand up for fairness, for investment in young people, and for tackling inequality head-on, not with slogans but with substance.
Joining the Green Party feels like joining a team that reflects my values and my commitment to fighting for a safer, fairer and more hopeful future for Sitwell.”
Councillor Mothin Ali, Deputy Co-Leader of the Green Party of England & Wales, welcomed the news:
“Mick’s decision to join the Greens is inspiring and it shows how much politics is changing across Yorkshire and across the country.
People are turning to the Greens because they want straight-talking honesty, bold leadership and councillors who put communities first.
Mick is a brilliant example of that. His record, his values and the respect he has earned in Sitwell make him an outstanding addition to the Green family. I’m thrilled to welcome him.”
Although the party is now represented on the council, Cllr Bower will still be treeated as an independent, as rules dictate a political ‘group’ needs at least two members.
