Historic pub’s new future emerges

A town centre pub is set to be turned into a mini-market, with an application now in to sell alcohol around the clock.

The former Bridge Inn pub, on Greasbrough Road, is the subject of a licensing application submitted to Rotherham Council.

If successful, it would see the pub make way for a convenience store, selling “a wide range of goods”, including alcohol, which would be available 24 hours a day, for consumption off the premises.

The business would also be able to provide “late night refreshments” between 11pm and 5am, if the license was granted.

The application has been made by Kari Retail Ltd and there is an opportunity for people to make representations to the council, which must be done by September 18, if they are to be considered.

The pub was added to Rotherham’s local heritage list earlier this year in recognition of its role as a community pub, though it was not trading by that point.

When it was trading, the business was also known as The Hive and has been closed since October 2024.

At the time, it was announced that the building, understood to date from the 1930s, had been sold by its brewery owner to a private buyer.

It was opened by a local brewer after construction and more recently was known as a venue for bands and as a meeting point for biker groups.

The building’s prominent location and distinctive architecture means it is one of the town centre’s landmarks.
