Online fashion retailer promises 1,000 South Yorks jobs

INTERNET fashion success ASOS is to bring up to 1,000 jobs to the Rotherham area with a £40 million warehouse investment.

The on-line clothing company, which specialises in celebrity-inspired creations, is expected to open its new 500,000 sq ft premises just over the borough boundary at Darfield, near Barnsley, early next year.

The new base will be three times the size of its current premises in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

In moving to the fringes of Rotherham, ASOS follows in the footsteps of fellow clothing giant Next, which has a giant 1.1 million sq ft warehouse at Manvers.

ASOS is forecasting £20 million of capital expenditure this financial year on the new warehouse as the business continues to expand.

ASOS’s existing 360 staff have been told they are welcome to transfer to the new site from the firms current base.

Pre-tax profits for the year to March increased by more than 25 per cent to £20.4 million. UK sales were up almost a fifth and international sales almost doubled.

ASOS was launched ten years ago by Nick Robertson and is now the UK’s leading online fashion store.
