The fire also spread to the vacant former Poundstretcher unit next door, which recently had covered all the windows with signs saying a new gym was coming soon.

A spokesperson for SYFR said this morning: “Several fire crews attended a derelict building fire at 10.35pm on Bridgegate in Rotherham town centre.

“The fire also spread to a gym next door. The fire is believed to have started accidentally.”

Elsewhere, firefighters were called out to a detached garage on fire just after 2am on Sunday at Sough Hall Road, Thorpe Hesley. The incident is believed to have been started accidentally, SYFR said.

There were two fires at Goldthorpe on Saturday. An accidental blaze at a cornfield on Barnburgh Lane at 3pm was followed by a deliberate vehicle fire at 11.40pm on Lesley Road.
