POLICE are investigating alleged racist abuse against football manager Darren Moore (pictured) which provoked outraged online.

A social media account tweeted a racial slur against the Sheffield Wednesday boss after Friday’s 4-0 defeat to Peterborough, prompting a wave of criticism from fellow Owls and fans of other clubs.

A later tweet from the same user read: “I apologise for any comments that may have upset people. They were said in anger. I’m no racist, just a poor choice of words.”

As of today, the Twitter account used to send the tweets — understood to be linked to a fan from Rotherham — appeared to have been deleted.

A statement from Sheffield Wednesday said they were “appalled by a repulsive racist message directed at Darren Moore posted on a social media platform following our game against Peterborough United on Friday evening”.

South Yorkshire Police said they were aware of the matter, adding: “It is being investigated.”
