MP's challenge to NatWest over Wickersley branch closure

BIG bank NatWest was accused of a "nonsensical" decision after announcing it was closing its branch in Wickersley.

MP Alexander Stafford wrote to the bank's chief executive to protest against the move to shut the bank on Bawtry Road in October - and the bank is understood to be “investigating” the move. The closure would leave Wickersley without a bank following the loss of Lloyd’s and HSBC

NatWest said more customers than ever were banking online and the Wickersley branch had just six individual customers visiting at least weekly - but its report on the closure also revealed there were 182 regular business customers.

The bank said almost two-thirds of customers were “digitally active” and in-bank transactions had fallen by 62 per cent.

Mr Stafford said: “ I think this is a nonsensical argument and do not believe that they should be closing this essential service.

“This will disproportionately affect elderly and those who do not use digital banking as well as the 182 business customers who use this branch regularly.”

The MP said he had taken up the issue up directly with NatWest as access to bank branches was “vital”.

And this week he published on social media a letter from an official in the NatWest’s chief executive Alison Rose’ office stating they would “investigate your concerns with the area of the bank concerned” and report back within ten working days.

Mr Stafford said: “I am pleased to announce that NatWest have agreed to open an investigation into the decision, especially around their claims that only six people regularly use the bank.

“Whilst this does not mean it is saved, hopefully the investigation will mean that there is chance we can keep our much needed bank.”

The nearest NatWest after the proposed closure would be on Howard Street in the town centre.

The bank pointed out there were banking services available at the Post office next door.
