Joy for youth rugby team as kit-maker steps in to replace stolen strips

A “GENEROUS” kit maker has offered to replace the stolen strip of a youth rugby club in Rotherham.

As the Advertiser reported earlier today, the under-14 girls rugby team at Rotherham Phoenix were devastated after thieves nicked their “brand new, bespoke” kit from their coach’s car.

Coach David Reid at Rotherham Phoenix said he was disappointed to see the kit pinched, as the team only had the shirts since after Christmas.

“It is devastating for the girls”, he said, adding that having the new kit had avoided the team having to borrow strip from the boys’ side.

However, Canterbury New Zealand, which makes sports kit, has got in touch to say that they would produce and supply 15 “bespoke” shirts for free.

David added things were already “in motion”, adding: “It’s incredibly generous.

“I am very grateful. After the day we’ve had, it’s a bit overwhelming.”

The delighted coach said Canterbury added the company had promised them to have the jerseys made and it could take eight to ten weeks and would be ready for the next season.

David had started a fundraising appeal and it was already passed the £100 mark but it has now been withdrawn.

He added: “I’m in the process of writing a thank you to everyone who donated.”
