Firefighters swoop to rescue hedgehog from fire

A HEDGEHOG was fortunate to be saved from a fire after being spotted by a firefighter.

Watermeadows Hedgehog Rescue, based in Penistone, offered its thanks to South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue for helping to save the prickly creature in in Dinnington — now nicknamed Phoenix.

She was injured during the fire but the quick thinking of the fire service helped to save her from a grave outcome.

A Watermeadows spokesperson said: “Phoenix was very fortunate to be found by a firefighter and was immediately bathed with cool water.

“A large portion of her quills have been singed and she has a small wound on her back.

“On arrival at the rescue, Phoenix was washed with saline to ensure that there was no residual heat in the follicles.

“A soothing gel was then applied to help keep the area moist and to aid healing.

“Phoenix was then given subcutaneous fluids, pain relief, and antibiotics.”

Watermeadows said Phoenix had soon settled and enjoyed some biscuits.
