Hide AdAs previously reported, Sheffield councillor Sophie Wilson will defend for Labour in Rother Valley, which was Sir Kevin Barron’s patch for 36 years.
Among the challengers is the area’s only independent candidate Nigel Short, of Aston, who said he decided to stand because the Labour party he once voted for was now “unrecognisable” to many residents.
He added: “I feel that the Labour Party has arrogantly assumed that our constituency will blindly vote for anybody in a red rosette.
“I don’t want to be represented by someone who is clearly being fast-tracked into a life as a career MP.”

Hide AdGreen candidate Emily West said recent flooding across the area had highlighted the environment as a key issue for the December 12 vote.
She added: “As big an issue as Brexit might be, the biggest existential crisis we face right now is from climate change.
“We were told the 2007 floods were a one-in-100 year event, now we’re seeing the same levels of disruption, and devastation to homes, businesses and livelihoods again.”
Two RMBC councillors are standing against Labour’s Sarah Champion in Rotherham — Lib Dem Adam Carter and Paul Hague, of the Brexit Party.

Hide AdThe Tories have fielded three hopefuls from outside the borough — but played up their links to the area.
Alex Stafford, from west London, is standing in Rother Valley.
He said: “I have close ties with the area, with family from Dinnington and a strong heritage in the steel and coal industries, where both my mother and father-in-law worked.”
Nearer to Rotherham is Wentworth and Dearne candidate Emily Barley, from Oldcotes, who the party describes as one of its “new breed” of northern, working class Conservatives.

Hide AdFormer HGV driver Gerri Hickton, from Erewash in Derbyshire, is standing for the party in Rotherham.
She said she understood the value of safe and affordable homes, having grown up in social housing.
Ex-floods minister John Healey, Labour’s Wentworth and Dearne candidate, has talked about the recent floods disruption as a reason not to vote Tory.
He said: “When northern homes and businesses were underwater, Boris Johnson told us that the flooding wasn’t a national emergency. It’s hard to imagine him saying the same if this had happened in London.”
The deadline to register to vote is 11.59pm today.
