Eight years' jail for speeding driver who "mowed down" woman (52) at Clifton crossing

A “CALLOUS” motorist who “mowed down” a woman on a pedestrian crossing near a busy park has been jailed for eight years for causing her death by dangerous driving.

Alan Stubbings (54), of Carlisle Place, Rotherham, was driving his silver Ford Focus car more than ten mph above the 30mph speed limit when he hit Hasina Idris Mohamed (52, pictured) on a crossing outside Clifton Park, on Doncaster Road, on August 6, 2016.

Ms Mohamed died at the scene despite efforts from passers-by and paramedics to save her.

Stubbings had never passed a driving test or taken a driving lesson and held only an expired provisional driving licence.

He was jailed at Sheffield Crown Court today (Wednesday) after a jury of six men and six women returned a unanimous verdict of guilty following a two-and-a-half day trial.

Sentencing Stubbings, Judge Peter Kelson said: “This is a tragic loss of life and no sentence I impose can bring [Hasan] back or in any way compensate for her life.

“You had no regard or care at all for anybody apart from yourself - this was callous, brutal indifference.

“She was on the pedestrian crossing and you mowed her down.”
