Early morning blaze after arsonists douse Mexborough shop in petrol

ARSONISTS used petrol to set fire to a Mexborough shop in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday) — causing “significant damage”.

Crews from Dearne, Rotherham and Edlington stations were called just after midnight to a shop on Bank Street.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the premises and used a hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze.

The fire had been started deliberately in a number of different places, said a fire service spokeswoman, and caused significant damage. Petrol was used as an accelerant.

No-one was injured and crews left the scene at 1.40am.

Police were called to the scene at 12.25am and an investigation is now underway, said a spokeswoman.
