Downing Street officials have confirmed Mr Johnson (above) and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak will receive penalties over the “Partygate” scandal.

Wentworth & Dearne MP Mr Healey said: “These police fines are proof that Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak broke the laws that they made and the rest of us followed during the covid pandemic.

“Lawmakers cannot be lawbreakers, and no-one is above the law.

Britain deserves better from its government and both should resign."

Rotherham MP Sarah Champion echoed the call for resignations, saying: “It turns my stomach that while people in Rotherham made huge personal sacrifices to abide by Covid rules, our prime minister and chancellor decided they were exempt.

“Worse, they were the people who made the laws and threatened us to keep them, while they partied.

“In terms of democracy, their contempt for the law is hugely undermining — Boris and Rishi are elected to serve in the best interest of the country.

“The fact they have clearly demonstrated they think they are above the law, especially when it comes to measures to keep us all safe, is very disturbing.

“What else do they feel they can ignore for their own benefit?

“For once they should do the right thing and resign.

It is understood the prime minister’s wife, Carrie Johnson, is also among those to be fined.

A No 10 spokesman said the PM and chancellor “have today received notification that the Metropolitan Police intend to issue them with fixed penalty notices”.
