Brain injury charity awarded £10,000 to help Rotherham patients

The money has been handed over to Headway Rotherham by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, which supports former mining towns and villages. 

The funding, which totals £9,994, will allow Headway Rotherham to maintain and expand the services it offers to brain injury patients and their support network.

Headway uses a range of social, sporting, educational and wellbeing activities to improve the health and wellbeing of those suffering negative effects of an acquired brain injury (ABI), providing them with the resources and time they need to successfully rehabilitate. 

The Rawmarsh-based charity also holds social meetings and support groups for carers and the network of family and friends that surround those that are suffering from a brain injury, making sure they have a space to relax and discuss the problems they face. 

Kris Mentlak, trustee of Headway Rotherham, said: “Every 90 seconds someone in the UK is admitted to hospital with a brain injury.

“Recovering from this trauma and resuming some form of normal day-to-day life can be extremely difficult. The support and programmes that we offer allow people to recover from their injuries and get back on track to leading a normal life once again.

“Brain injuries can also have negative effects on people’s network which includes family and friends. By holding social events and support groups, we are able to give them the opportunity to take a break, talk about their own problems and make sure they know that they’re not alone.”  

Andy Lock, head of operations (England) for the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, added: “The work delivered by Headway Rotherham is incredibly important and allows those suffering from brain injuries to return to normal day-to-day life.

“We know that health problems remain a challenge in coalfields communities, but by working with organisations such as Headway we are able to ensure everyone has the support and care that they need.”

As Headway has become a member of Coalfield Community Investment Programme, it will continue to be supported by the trust and will have access to support and services.
