A TEENAGER won a trip to the US after being named apprentice of the year at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.

Leigh Worsdale will visit Boeing’s factory in Washington State to see how the global aerospace firm designs, builds and tests its 737s.

AMRC Training Centre staff and award sponsors picked between apprentices put forward by employers.

Leigh (18), an apprentice diesel engine builder for Foxwood Diesel in Chesterfield, said: “I’m shocked to win but it’s amazing and the prize is so good.”

Foxwood managing director Ken Worsdale said Leigh was enthusiastic and working well ahead of her training plan.

AMRC co-founder Prof Keith Burnett said: “I am extremely proud of the achievements of our talented apprentices and of those who train and mentor them at our AMRC Training Centre.

“The UK desperately needs skilled engineers to help boost productivity and growth in our economy and our apprentices really are the future of skilled manufacturing workers.”

AMRC Training Centre director Kerry Featherstone added: “Our job on the judging panel was not easy. They have all done such a wonderful job.”
