BIRTHDAY BEACON: Townsfolk will have an opportunity to attend the lighting of a birthday beacon on June 11 8.15pm to mark the official 90th birthday of the Queen. The lighting, which follows a short ceremony, will be held in the grounds of St Mary’s Parish Church. This is the second birthday beacon to be lit to honour the Queen’s birthday and follows the one at Tickhill Castle last month.

TOUR RETURN: Tickhill Town Council says that the town’s welcoming of stage two of the Tour de Yorkshire (TdY) cycle race was a success and was watched as it passed through the community by thousands of residents and visitors. There was disappointment that technical difficulties experienced by the TdY broadcasters meant that no live pictures were broadcast of the women’s inaugural race and very little of the men’s race. The council is to ask the TdY race organisers Welcome to Yorkshire  and French company Amaury Sports Organisation if they will consider including Tickhill on the route of future races.

VOLUNTEER WEEK: The Doncaster Volunteer Forum has encouraged local community groups, businesses and organisations to show their support for Volunteers’ Week. Entitled The Big Celebration, it runs from June 1 to June 12. Townsfolk have been asked to do something to celebrate the valuable contribution that volunteers make throughout their communities.

JAZZ NIGHT: Live jazz will be heard for the first time at The Lofthouse wine and coffee bar on June 8. Jim Carroll welcomes the quartet of Russell Henderson (saxophone), Nik Svarc (guitar), Colin Sutton (bass) and Nick Katuszonek (drums) to his Sunderland Street venue for the session of arrangements of classic pop and rock and tracks mixed with jazz-fusion standards 8pm.
