MALTBY TOWN COUNCIL EVENTS COMMITTEE: The meeting on January 21 was attended by eight councillors and town clerk Mrs K Butler. Feedback was given about the Christmas lights switch-on and it was agreed that in 2016 the event would take place on November 19. Dates were put forward for events in 2016 – subject to change. Information/safety day on April 9, civic service on May 22, Queen’s 90th birthday celebration on June 11, firework display on November 5 and Christmas lights switch-on on November 19. It was resolved that the clerk contacts St Bart’s Church to ensure the date for the civic service is available and the clerk also to invite dignitaries.

MALTBY TOWN COUNCIL FINANCE AND STAFFING COMMITTEE: The meeting on January 21 was attended by seven councillors and town clerk Mrs Kate Butler. All payment schedules, receipts schedules, reconciliations and budgets were accepted. There were no small grant applications. It was resolved that all staff are paid the relevant NJC salary scale for their positions. It was also resolved that the clerk brings staff targets to the appraisals.

Every Wednesday – Herbalife (nutrition, fitness and weight management advice group) 6-7pm. March 3 and every Thursday – Maltby Musical Theatre Group 7.30pm. March 7 and every Monday – Maltby Minors Musical and Drama Group 6pm. March 9-11 – Maltby through the Ages: local history display 9am-5pm each day, final presentation on March 11 7.30pm by local history student Josh Daniels from Sheffield Hallam University. March 13 and every Sunday – Zion Church 10am. March 16 – Zion Craft Club 12.30-2.30pm. March 30 – Zion Craft Club 12.30-2.30pm.

 

MALTBY REDWOOD JUNIOR/INFANT SCHOOL: The choir participated in the Young Voices concert at Sheffield Arena on January 21 in front of 7,000 people. They spent the afternoon rehearsing alongside 5,000 other primary school students. The performance was a two hour extravaganza of children singing and professional performances on stage. Miss Stephenson and Mrs Monks spent hours in preparation and practise. The choir is currently taking a break but will resume after Easter on Thursday evenings in preparation for ther next performance at Rotherham’s One Voice.

 

ST BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH: Lent lunches this year will be on March 4, 11, and 18, all noon. Proceeds to Christian Aid. St Bartholomew’s Church is located on Church Lane just off the A634 Blyth Road S66 8JB. Arrangements for baptisms and weddings can be made in the church vestry 6-7pm on Mondays. MALTBY LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY: The society’s meeting on February 18 opened with a tribute to Prof David Hey given by honorary secretary Alice Rodgers. David Hey first addressed the newly formed Maltby Local History in 1982 and in subsequent years he visited the group on many occasions. The group stood to observe a minute’s silence in his memory. Later, the group was addressed by Margaret Jackson who gave a talk on Wellgate: The Story of a Rotherham Street. The society’s next meeting at Maltby Library is on March 17 when the theme will be Sinking Maltby Colliery and the speaker Alice Rodgers. Contact 01709 812035.

 

MALTBY ACADEMY: Easter Multi Sports Camps will take place March 21-24. It is open to ages 5-14 years old. There will be street dance, basketball, tag rugby, football, netball, rounders, cricket, all delivered by NGB qualified coaches – four days for £25. For information, go to www.maltbyacademy.com. World Number Day – students and staff at the Academy celebrated World Number Day by taking part in a national timetable competition organised by the website Times Table Rock Stars. The budding mathematicians battled others across the country and Maltby Academy finished third. Last half term, students from Y9, Y10 and Y11 were entered to sit the UKMT intermediate maths challenge. From this 33 students were awarded certificates (with seven gold, 10 silver and 16 bronze). Several students have qualified for the follow-on round, the intermediate Kangaroo, which will take place on March 17. Sheffield FC Scholarship football team who beat TRC in the South Yorkshire Cup semi-final.

 

SURGERY TIMES: Cllr John Turner, who represents the Hellaby ward on Rotherham Council, holds a surgery at Brooklands Club on Rotherham Road, Maltby, on the fourth Tuesday of each month 5.30-6.30pm.
